PEE-WEE'S BIG HOLIDAY Movie Officially Set for Netflix
Pee-wee Herman is officially coming to Netflix with his long-awaited new movie Pee-wee's Big Holiday. This is the film that Paul Reubens has been developing with producer Judd Apatow (Funny People, Knocked Up) for the last few years. It's really exciting to see that it's actually happening.
The story of the film centers around "a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger [that] inspires Pee-wee to take his first-ever holiday in an epic story of friendship and destiny."
There's no release date yet, but production is scheduled to start early this year. The movie will be directed by John Lee (Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer), who will be making his feature-film directorial debut with the film. He will direct from a script written by Reubens and Paul Rust (Arrested Development, Inglourious Basterds).
Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement:
“We didn’t hesitate for a moment knowing that ‘Pee-wee’s Big Holiday’ was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation.”
Apatow added:
“As a fan of Pee-wee Herman since he first appeared on ‘The Dating Game,’ I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the brilliant Paul Reubens on this film. It is a dream come true.”
Pee-wee Herman first appeared in 1981 at L.A.'s The Groundlings improv theater. That was the start of an incredibly fun franchise that had a great TV series, a couple of classic films, and a stage production. It's so cool to see that after all these years Pee-wee still has a large fanbase and that his comeback is gaining steam. I really hope this movie does well for him.
