PENNYWORTH Will Be "Unhinged, R-Rated" and May Feature Alfred Battling the Descendants of Jack The Ripper

We’ve got some interesting new information to share with you regarding the upcoming Batman prequel series Pennyworth.

Pennyworth follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), a former British SAS soldier in his 20s who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire, Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) in 1960s London.

While talking about the series recently, producer Danny Cannon had this to say:

"It’s twentysomething years before Gotham, it’s a very different world; this is the DC version of 1960s London. 13 degrees history is different: It’s not the England we know. It looks and feels like, but if you look a little closer, (you ask) why is that like that? Why is that building there? What war is he talking about?"

Cannon called the version of London in this series a "poetic reality" of the real thing, and explained that it’s "just like I wanted people in Gotham to search for the darkest part of New York." And while Alfred won’t be fighting any classic Batman villains, he explains that there will be "archetypal villains and classic villains of British literature; they’re all available to us."

He then teased that Alfred could find himself up against the descendants of of Jack the Ripper. Jack the Ripper, will long be dead during the time of this series, but his descendants in this universe may have gone down a similar dark path.

Cannon went on to add that since the 10-episode series will be airing on Epix, they don’t have to worry about censorship and are looking to develop Pennyworth as a "unhinged, R-rated" series! That’s exciting, and I can’t wait to see how this thing turns out!

Pennyworth is set to premiere on Epix this June.
