Peter Berg’s WWII Action Movie THE MOSQUITO BOWL Gets an Intense New Trailer

Netflix has released a new full trailer for director Peter Berg’s upcoming World War II action thriller The Mosquito Bowl, and this looks like one hell of an intense war movie. The film tells the true story of college football stars who traded their helmets and stadium glory for the brutal battlefields of the Pacific.

Set during World War II, the story follows four of America's top college football players who put their promising athletic careers aside to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

By Christmas Eve 1944, the 4th and 29th Marine regiments were training in the Pacific for the invasion of Okinawa, which would become one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Among the Marines preparing for combat was an extraordinary collection of football talent, including former All-Americans and team captains from Wisconsin, Brown, and Notre Dame.

Before heading into battle, these men participated in a legendary football game that brought some of the country's greatest players together one final time. For many of them, it would be the last game they ever played.

The new trailer offers a great look at what Berg has put together, with some brutal combat footage and a story that goes well beyond the football field. It looks like the kind of hard-hitting war drama that Berg does particularly well, balancing intense action with the personal stories of the men caught in the fighting.

Berg shared the following statement about the film: "This is a film about young men who were sports heroes at home and became war heroes on the shores of the Pacific... The Mosquito Bowl honors the humanity of those who fought, mourns those who never came home, and reminds us of the true cost of war."

The movie stars Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, Tom Francis, Brent Comer, and Dominic Bogart.

Berg has plenty of experience telling intense stories inspired by real events, having directed films such as Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day. He's also no stranger to football movies, having directed Friday Night Lights, so combining a football story with a WWII combat drama seems like a natural fit for him.

His other directing credits include The Rundown, The Kingdom, Hancock, Battleship, Mile 22, and Spenser Confidential, along with the Netflix series American Primeval and episodes of Boys in Blue and Painkiller.

The film's tagline sums up the story perfectly: "Trained for glory. Called to war." What makes this story interesting is that these young men had already achieved the kind of success most college athletes could only dream of, but they walked away from it to serve their country.

The football game at the center of the film is only one part of a much larger story about friendship, sacrifice, and the devastating realities of war.

The Mosquito Bowl opens in select U.S. theaters on October 30, 2026, before making its Netflix streaming debut on November 25, 2026, just in time for Thanksgiving. I’m looking forward to watching this.
