Peter Dinklage Talks About GAME OF THRONES and How it "Offended a Lot of People"

Game of Thrones was a freakin’ great and epic series up until it started falling apart over the final two seasons. Then the show came to an end, it did not end in a satisfying way for most fans. In a recent interview with Peter Dinklage, the actor addressed the ending and how it offended a lot of people. He shared:

"You try [to avoid the chatter], but that was impossible. You're reminded of it on a daily basis by the fans. They had deep knowledge, but if somebody loves something they have their version of it in their head, so we got criticism early. Then, when we were leaving, they criticized again because they didn't want us to go. Some got angry. But if you appeal to everyone you're doing something wrong. And we offended a lot of people."

Dinklage has been defending the Game of Thrones ending in another interview with The New York Times. The actor talked about the fans, saying:

“They wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together…By the way, it’s fiction. There’s dragons in it. Move on. No, but the show subverts what you think, and that’s what I love about it. Yeah, it was called ‘Game of Thrones,’ but at the end, the whole dialogue when people would approach me on the street was, ‘Who’s going to be on the throne?’ I don’t know why that was their takeaway because the show really was more than that.”

Look, I loved the characters in the show, the performances were phenomenal from beginning to end. However, the writers and showrunners of the show couldn’t keep the storytelling quality high, especially after they ran out of source material from George R.R. Martin. Then for some reason, they ditched all of the notes that Martin gave them and the story suffered because of it. It had nothing to do with wanting to see “pretty white people riding off into the sunset.” For me, the end just felt choppy and rushed. Hell, even George R.R. Martin was worried about the show after Season 5!

Dinklage’s character Tyrion was my favorite character in the series, and he was awesome in the show. The actor seems to miss playing him as well, and went on to say:

“I do miss Tyrion. He was just lovely, funny and the writers were smart to not only give him the joke that ends up on a T-shirt, but also have him be more than that — in a world prejudiced against him. Every season we’d get all 10 scripts at the start, like a novel. I’d go through them ravenously. Not to find out if my character died, but just to enjoy it. It was really such a joy.”

What do you all think about Dinklage’s comments on the series and the fans?
