Peter Jackson Takes Us Behind the Scenes of THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT 4K Remaster
The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit fans will be able to experience the epic Middle Earth fantasy films in a new way as they have been given the 4K remaster treatment.
We have a featurette to share with you today in which director Peter Jackson takes us behind the scenes of the process and discusses the remastering process.
I know some of you might not think that these six films being remastered in 4K is a big deal, but Jackson explains why it is. The filmmaker had a problem with the inconsistency of the films. You see, the films are supposed to tell one incredible epic story set in the same world. But, because the films were shot at different times with different filmmaking technology, they all have a different visual look.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was shot on 35mm using an old mechanical color timing process. The Two Towers and The Return of the King were also shot on 35mm, but they used digital color timing. Then you have theThe Hobbit trilogy, the films of which were all shot digitally. This created an inconsistency with the look of the films, and Jackson wants them to all have the same visual consistency.
This 4K remaster will make the films look like the films were all shot the same with the same filmmaking technology, and I think that’s pretty cool!
Jackson also used the opportunity to fix some of the visual effects issues that he saw while remastering the movies. But, none of the special effects have been changed or updated. Just little fixes here and there. Check out the video below to learn more!
Warner Bros. will release each series separately in its own respective box set, including a Lord of the Rings set that will include a replica of the titular ring. WB also announced it will also release a 4K Ultra HD Middle-Earth Ultimate Collector’s Edition set in summer of 2021 that will feature all six films and their theatrical and extended cuts along with an array of new bonus material and remastered Blu-ray discs of both trilogies. I might just wait for that Ultimate Collector’s Edition.
