Peter Mullan Spirals Into Obsession in Trailer for THE FALL OF SIR DOUGLAS WEATHERFORD
Mubi has released the first UK trailer for The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford, a darkly comedic Scottish drama that looks equal parts tragic, awkward, and weirdly charming.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Seán Dunn, and after making the festival rounds earlier this year, it’s finally gearing up for a theatrical release in the UK this June.
Leading the film is BAFTA-nominated Scottish acting powerhouse Peter Mullan, who plays Kenneth, a man completely devoted to the legacy of Sir Douglas Weatherford, an 18th-century inventor and philosopher celebrated as the pride of the tiny village of Arberloch.
Kenneth works at the local visitors’ center as a tour guide, dressing up as Weatherford every day and performing with the kind of theatrical enthusiasm that makes it clear this isn’t just a job to him. He practically treats the historical figure like family.
That fragile little world starts falling apart when a massive fantasy television production rolls into town to shoot scenes for a series called The White Stag of Emberfell, which feels very much like a playful jab at the whole Game of Thrones phenomenon.
Suddenly the village is flooded with cosplay-loving fans, oversized production crews, and money beyond anything the locals are used to seeing.
And Kenneth? He gets pushed to the sidelines. As the town becomes consumed by the flashy fantasy production, Kenneth’s fixation on the show’s lead actor sends him into an emotional tailspin that gradually wrecks his sense of identity.
The film looks like it’s balancing uncomfortable humor with emotional storytelling, especially as Kenneth’s collapse unfolds in front of his daughter Anna.
The movie also stars Gayle Rankin, Jakob Oftebro, Sid Sagar, and Lewis MacDougall. Dunn wrote and directed the project.
The film looks like a wonderfully strange character study where you aren’t quite sure whether to laugh, cringe, or feel terrible for the guy.
Mubi will release The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford in UK cinemas on June 12, 2026. There’s still no word on a US release.
