Peter Parker Will Play a Role in The Animated SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Film and Here's How

This past weekend, Sony Pictures released the first teaser trailer for their upcoming animated Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and I loved what I saw! I thought it has an incredibly cool and wild style and the fact that they are exploring the Spider-Verse, where there are multiple versions of Spider-Man, is so cool!

The main focus of this movie will be on Miles Morales. This will be his movie, but Peter Parker will also have a supporting role in the story. During a panel at CCXP (via Collider) writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller clarified exactly what role Peter Parker plays in this story. One of the main things that they wanted from Peter in this film was for him to be the grownup in the room for the first time and be a mentor to Miles.

For those of you not familiar with the relationship between Mile Morales and Peter Parker in the comics, In Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man, Miles is bitten by a different genetically engineered spider from the same laboratory that had engineered the spider that got Peter Parker. Even though this gives Miles superpower abilities, he decides to keep it a secret and not use his powers. But, after seeing Peter Parker killed by Green Goblin, Miles decides to come out of the shadows and become a hero.

Peter Parker's death is actually pointed out in the trailer in this shot of Miles visiting his grave at the cemetery.

But at the end of the trailer, we see Miles talking to an older, more mature Peter Parker in the subway! In Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man, Peter Parker is alive and he and Miles have a relationship. They even team up to fight alongside each other. Here's that scene from the trailer:

So how is this all possible? If Peter Parker is dead, how is he going to be a part of this movie and be a mentor to Miles? Miles Morales enters an alternate universe, of course! Sony Pictures Animation sent out a press release for the trailer, they offered a bit of info on this aspect of the story, explaining the image below:

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) falls through an alternate-universe New York City in Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

In this alternate universe, there are multiple Spider-Men, which is why Miles asks Peter in the subway, "Wait… so how many of us are there?” In the comic book Spider-Verse event there were spider-heroes that came together from across Marvel’s multiverse to fight an inter-dimensional threat. I have no idea if that's the direction this film will go, so we'll just have to wait and see.

What I like about this, is that we are going to get to see a side of Peter Parker that we've never seen before in any movie. I also like that this film will open up an alternate universe where there are some many awesome story possibilities for lots of different characters.

Anyway, this first trailer only gives us a little taste of what's in store for us. When talking about the style of the film, Lord and Miller explained that they "wanted to create a Spider-Man animated movie that makes you feel like you walked inside a comic book." It certainly looks like they accomplished that in the most awesome ways! I can't wait to see more!

What do you think about the direction they are taking this movie?
