Peter Sarsgaard Joins THE LAST OF US Season 3 as HBO Series Takes a Production Break

HBO’s The Last of Us continues to build anticipation for its third season, and now fans have another intriguing addition to keep an eye on. Peter Sarsgaard has officially joined the cast of the hit post-apocalyptic drama in a recurring role, stepping into a brand-new character created specifically for the series.

Sarsgaard will play Amon, one of the leaders of the Seraphites, a religious faction. What makes the casting especially interesting is that Amon isn’t a character pulled directly from the video games.

Instead, he appears to be a fresh addition crafted for HBO’s adaptation, which opens the door for some new storytelling opportunities as the series continues to expand its world.

The casting news arrives as production on Season 3 enters a planned hiatus. According to reports, filming has temporarily paused for roughly a month, a break that lines up with the FIFA World Cup.

Vancouver, where much of The Last of Us is filmed, is one of the tournament’s host cities. With the massive international event expected to dominate the area and affect location filming, the production team is using the opportunity to take a scheduled pause before resuming work.

Once filming picks back up, production is expected to continue through the remainder of the year. HBO is currently targeting a 2027 premiere for Season 3.

While HBO hasn’t officially confirmed whether Season 3 will be the final chapter of the series, it is widely expected to serve as the conclusion to the adaptation.

Co-created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us is set in a world where civilization collapsed two decades earlier following a devastating fungal outbreak.

The story began with Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, a hardened survivor tasked with smuggling Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, out of a military-controlled quarantine zone. What started as a simple assignment evolved into a brutal, emotional cross-country journey that forced the two to rely on one another to survive.

Season 2 jumped forward five years from the events of the first season and introduced several key characters from The Last of Us Part II, including Abby Anderson, played by Kaitlyn Dever.

HBO is keeping Season 3 story details under wraps, but fans familiar with the games have a pretty good idea where things are headed. The next chapter is expected to center heavily on Abby’s storyline, which naturally places the Seraphites in a much more prominent position within the narrative.

That makes Sarsgaard’s casting particularly noteworthy. Bringing in an actor of his caliber for a newly created Seraphite leader suggests the show may be expanding elements of the faction’s story beyond what players experienced in the games.

There’s also a notable creative shift heading into the new season. After serving as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Druckmann during the first two seasons, Mazin will take over as the sole showrunner for Season 3.
