PETE'S DRAGON Takes Flight in New Clips

Two new clips from Disney and director David Lowery’s upcoming remake of Pete’s Dragon have hit the internet. Like everything else we’ve seen from the movie, these clips look wildly different from the 1977 original, which I have mixed feelings about. However, no matter whether you loved the original and think it shouldn’t be touched, or loved the original and think this should have been a shot for shot remake, or hated the original and think all extant copies should be burned, this new Pete’s Dragon looks really good.

The first clip shows Pete (Oakes Fegley) and Elliott (a dragon) playing in the forest, and holy mother does this dragon looks better than the original cartoony version. It also doesn’t look much like most dragons we’ve seen in anything ever. He’s definitely a dragon, but with the fur and the dog-like snout, he’s more Falkor than Drogon.

The second clip captures a quieter moment between Pete and Natalie (Oona Laurence) talking about imaginary friends.

Here is the film’s synopsis:

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

Pete’s Dragon opens on August 12.
