Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s TOMB RAIDER Series With Sophie Turner Reportedly Scrapped by Amazon
It looks like Lara Croft is staying in the tomb a little longer.
The Tomb Raider series that Amazon has been developing, which was set to star Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner and written by Fleabag mastermind Phoebe Waller-Bridge, has reportedly been canceled before cameras could even roll.
According to the Daily Mail, sources close to the project say the show is “dead.” One source stated, “I hear that it is not going ahead.”
Amazon hasn’t confirmed or denied the report, so for now, fans should keep a cautious grip on their climbing axes. Still, if true, it’s a pretty surprising shift for a project that had some serious firepower behind it.
The series was first revealed in early 2023, with Waller-Bridge attached as writer and executive producer. The show was officially ordered to series last year, and in October 2024, reports surfaced that Turner had taken part in screen tests to lead the adventure as Lara Croft.
Waller-Bridge, a self-proclaimed fan, was clearly thrilled about the opportunity, and said: “If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she'd explode.
“Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure. Bats 'n all.”
Waller-Bridge’s relationship with Amazon began in 2019 with an exclusive deal, which was renewed in 2024 but downgraded to a first-look agreement. It’s unclear whether that shift played a role in the show’s apparent demise, or if internal reshuffling at Amazon Studios led to its quiet burial.
While some fans will be disappointed by this, if it’s true, I’m sure that one day we will see another live-action Tomb Raider project.
