Poe and Leia's Relationship Will Carry Over Into STAR WARS: EPISODE IX

Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and General Leia (Carrie Fisher) have had a very interesting relationship in the latest Star Wars saga films. Poe learned a lot about what it takes to be a real leader from her. As you know, he is a bit of a short fuse and is kind of a hothead. There’s a lot that he still needs to learn from her.

Well, according to Isaac, the relationship that these two characters have had over the course of two movies will continue in Star Wars: Episode IX. We already knew that Leia will be in the film and the footage of her that will be used will come from scenes previously shot that were not used in the other movies.

While appearing as a guest on the SiriusXM show Tell Me John (via Reddit), Isaac was asked about working with Fisher on Star Wars: The Last Jedi and he shared how their close relationship will carry over into Episode IX. Here’s how that conversation went down:

Host: I know you just wrapped on [Star Wars: EpisodeIX. You’re going to be getting the Carrie Fisher questions all over the place. But when you saw [Star Wars: EpisodeVIII, were you surprised at how your relationship with Carrie Fisher was such an emotional centerpiece of the film?

Isaac: I wasn’t surprised because I remember we were doing that…we worked a lot and her, and I worked together so much, too, and we would talk about the scenes, and we would…you know, we got very tight during the shooting of that. So it was a beautiful thing to see, and it gets carried over into the new film.

Host: I look forward to having you here next year when we can talk about it because I can only imagine having to work with her, with the scenes they’re inserting, would be emotional for you on a whole other level.

Isaac: Yeah, no it is. It was definitely an unusual thing, but I also think it was right to engage with her character, and not just let it be something that fades away but can really give it its proper, you know, place of honor.

I didn’t think we would be seeing much of Leia in Episode IX, but judging from what Isaac is saying here, she is going to have a solid presence in the film and I’m really curious and excited to how he will continue the relationship between these two characters in a strong and meaningful way.

How do you hope to see this relationship explored further in the final chapter of the saga?

Star Wars: Episode IX drops in theaters on December 20th.
