POISON IVY is Getting Her Own HBO Series From THE PENGUIN Showrunner Lauren LeFranc
HBO is looking to give another Batman villain the spotlight, and this time, Poison Ivy is getting her shot. A new live-action Poison Ivy TV series is in development, with Lauren LeFranc, the showrunner behind HBO’s acclaimed The Penguin, attached as a producer.
According to Variety, the project is moving forward at HBO, although plot details and casting information haven't been revealed. Still, bringing LeFranc into the mix is a promising move, especially considering what she accomplished with The Penguin.
That series took Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobb, who first appeared in director Matt Reeves' The Batman, and turned him into the central figure of a brutal Gotham City crime story. The 2024 HBO series became a hit with critics and audiences.
Now, Poison Ivy could be the next Batman villain to receive that kind of attention, and she's certainly an interesting character to build a series around.
The DC Comics villain, also known as Pamela Isley, has the ability to manipulate plant life and use pheromones to influence people's minds. She's dangerous, seductive, and very protective of the natural world, which gives her plenty of potential beyond the usual Batman villain story.
Despite being one of Batman's most recognizable enemies, Poison Ivy has never headlined her own live-action movie or television series.
Her most famous big-screen appearance came in 1997's Batman & Robin, where Uma Thurman played the villain opposite George Clooney's Batman. Since then, she's appeared in live-action television series including Gotham and Batwoman.
Animation has given the character considerably more room to play. She's appeared in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, The New Batman Adventures, and Young Justice, among other projects.
More recently, Lake Bell voiced Poison Ivy in the animated series Harley Quinn, where her relationship with Harley became a major part of the story. That version of Ivy has been particularly fun, balancing her villainous tendencies with a surprisingly entertaining personal life.
The potential Poison Ivy series also comes as DC continues to expand its lineup of villain-focused projects. The upcoming Clayface movie puts another classic Batman enemy front and center.
HBO also has The People vs. Gorilla Grodd on the way, a comedic DC villain spinoff connected to James Gunn's Superman, with a planned 2027 release.
It's currently unclear whether Poison Ivy will take place in the same universe as The Penguin, connect to Gunn's larger DC Universe, or tell an entirely separate story.
Personally, I'd love to see Poison Ivy get a proper character-driven series that explores what makes Pamela Isley tick. There's a lot of interesting material to explore with her environmental extremism, complicated morality, and relationships.
If HBO can give Ivy the same level of attention that made The Penguin work, this could turn into something pretty awesome.
What do you think? Would you like to see Poison Ivy get her own HBO series, and who would you cast as Pamela Isley?
