POKÉMON SWORD and POKÉMON SHIELD Announced for the Nintendo Switch

Pokémon fans rejoice! This morning, The Pokémon Company unveiled Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, which are going to be the eighth generation of Pokémon games. If you watch the Pokémon Direct, you’ll see that we’re brought into a new region called Galar, and it looks to have been inspired by Great Britain. I think this looks fantastic. The graphics may need some polishing before release, but overall, I think the game as a whole is looking great.

Now, a lot of the Pokémon we saw were returning favorites, but we were given a glimpse of the three new starters for this generation: Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble. Grookey is a grass-type chimp that I would normally assume would be a Grass/Fighting dual type, but with the aesthetics I’m wondering if it will be another Grass/Ground like Torterra. Scorbunny is the Fire-type starter, and as the name suggests, it is a rabbit. This continues the tradition of the Fire-type being from the Chinese zodiac, and I love it. I will admit though that I have no idea what it’s second type will be. I just hope it is not Fire/Fighting. I would think Fire/Normal, but that just seems like a doomed combination. Finally, we have Sobble, a Water-type Water Lizard. It looks like Sobble was slightly inspired by a chameleon, but I’m sure there’s an actual animal it’s based on that I don’t know the name of. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what combination Sobble will be, but I kind of hope it’s something awesome like Water/Dragon. Of course, it is possible that none of these starters will have a dual type. When you look at them though, I’d say my favorite is Scorbunny so far with Sobble being a close second and then Grookey following.

As for new features, the trailer didn’t seem to indicate a lot. There will be weather it seems, and there seems to be some kind of tournament that utilizes a uniform. I’m not sure if it’s going to be a side quest type deal or if it’s the equivalent of the Elite 4 or something else. At first when I saw the PC walking out with the uniform I thought that soccer had somehow become a part of the game, but then realized what it actually was. However, that got me thinking a Pokémon soccer game could be fun.
