Pom Klementieff Teases an Awkward Romance Between Mantis and Drax in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2
In some of the recent information about James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we've learned a little bit more about the story and some of the new characters. One of those characters is Mantis, who is played by Pom Klementieff.
She is introduced in the story as a companion to Kurt Russell's Ego the Living Planet, and she meets the Guardians team through him. Up until this point she's spent her whole life with Ego, and it seems like things are about to change for her when she starts hanging out with this group of misfits.
During a recent interview with Mashable, she talked about her character further and even teased an awkward type romance between Mantis and Drax.
"So, she's an alien. And she's always with — at the beginning, she's spent her life with Kurt Russell's character. She was pretty lonely and then she meets the Guardians and...that's it. She has empathetic powers, so it's connected with feelings and emotions."
She explained:
"There's an awkwardness and a curiosity and ... how do you say? She wants to discover new things...she was really lonely and by herself, so it's a completely new thing to meet these people and to discover new things and new emotions and a new way of sharing things...I think it's like a kid, you know? You discover things and you're curious about things and you make mistakes and you say, like, weird things or you're awkward. And I think in a way it's touching when you see someone do that. You're like, Oh! OK, you're not really adapted to this society."
When asked to expand more on her relationship with Ego and her ties to Peter Quill, her publicist was quick to interject and prevent her from making any big reveals. However, she did say that Mantis would find some common ground with Drax:
"They get along. They just — there is a friendship going on and they just click, you know?"
She was then asked if there would be a romantic connection between the character and Klementieff teased:
"You'll see, you'll see! There is a funny moment, but I can't really tell. She's trying to connect with [Rocket Raccoon] and it doesn't really work."
From what I've seen of Mantis is seems like she and Drax would make a great couple. It would make sense to see some kind of romantic click between them, but we'll just have to wait to find out what director James Gunn has done with them.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released on May 5, 2017.
