POOR THINGS Director Yorgos Lanthimos to Direct SAVE THE GREEN PLANET! Emma Stone in Talks to Join
Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) is producing an English-language remake of the crazy genre-bending 2003 Korean film Save the Green Planet!, and Variety is reporting that Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos is on board to direct.
In the film, “Byeong-gu believes Earth is on the verge of an alien invasion and that he’s the only one who can save it. With his loyal girlfriend’s help, he kidnaps and brutally tortures corporate execs and politicians he believes to be aliens in disguise.”
Variety also reports that Emma Stone (Poor Things) is in talks to reunite with Lanthimos on the film. If cast, “Stone would most likely play a supporting role.”
This film project sounds like the perfect collaboration between Lanthimos and Aster, and it’s not hard to imagine Lanthimos's filmmaking style being incorporated into a story like this.
Joon-hwan Jang wrote and directed the original movie, which mashes up sci-fi, comedy, and horror with paranoia and ultra-violence. Save the Green Planet is loaded with shocking moments and unexpected twists.
Ari Aster and Square Peg partner Lars Knudsen said in a previous statement: “Swinging with youthful abandon between white-knuckle suspense, absurd slapstick, grim horror and a deeply felt (and earned) sense of tragedy, Save The Green Planet! is one of the most remarkable films to come out of South Korea – among this recent wave or any wave, for that matter.”
The original film is pretty wild and I imagine Aster and Lanthimos are going to do some bonkers things with this remake.
