POWER RANGERS BEAST MORPHERS Season 1 is Surprisingly Good
The first season of Power Rangers Beast Morphers is now available on Netflix and I finally finished watching it. I am incredibly impressed with it. If you’ve been following this series of articles, you know that Power Rangers SPD was ok, but not great. You should also know that before I started work on this series I watched the first few episodes of Power Rangers Mystic Force and hated it (don’t worry, I’ll still go through and give it a proper watch eventually). So, my expectations for Beast Morphers weren’t too high when I started watching this series. Then, as I kept watching, the season got better.
Beast Morphers felt a lot more like the original pre-Disney series. It’s hard to explain, but it does. I will also say that I was surprised by the quality of acting on the show. I’d come to simply expect pretty poor acting, but most of the actors were actually pretty good. I don’t want to do too much ranking, but I do think that Liana Ramirez as Roxy and Colby Strong as Blaze were possibly my favorites.
This season features 5 very distinct Rangers that I love. However, one thing that bothers me is that Devon (the Red Ranger) is the only one to get a unique weapon with the Cheetah Blaster. Speaking of their differences though, the first three Rangers each have a unique power associated with their beast and that’s pretty cool. What’s more is that they use these abilities as Rangers. I don’t remember if we see them when they’re unmorphed, but I prefer seeing it only morphed than only unmorphed like what we got in SPD.
The stories told throughout the first season are actually pretty decent and character development (what little happens) does stay pretty consistent and there isn’t really any flip-flopping. We also get to see them grow together as Rangers and support one another like when it comes out that Ravi likes to paint. We got to dive deeper into Ravi’s character which really helps us in the later episodes, and we got to see everyone support him. It should be noted that most episodes are very episodic, but towards the end things tend to be less so. Now, this isn’t to say that this is better or worse, just stating a fact. When done well, episodic stories can work better than some story arcs. I felt like the writing was actually pretty good in Beast Morphers and the episodic stories worked just as well as the one bigger story arc.
Another big plus about Beast Morphers is that it has just over 20 episodes and the last two are merely holiday specials that you don’t have to watch at all since they’re mostly clip shows. This means that there’s not enough time in the season to get what I’m now calling Power Rangers fatigue. My biggest complaints with early seasons is the length of the season as the vast majority of stories were episodic.
The final thing I want to bring up is the costumes. I genuinely really enjoy the fact that the Rangers are wearing more of a leather armor costumes instead of spandex. It’s really hard to imagine the spandex is very protective, but leather may be able to do something.
While I don’t think Beast Morphers was Emmy worthy television, I do think it’s a fantastic entry in Power Rangers. If you haven’t watched it yet, I highly recommend you do. I cannot wait to watch the second season of Beast Morphers to be available to stream.
