Powerful Trailer For Ben Foster's WWII Boxing Drama THE SURVIVAL
HBO has released the first trailer for an incredible-looking film titled The Survivor. The movie tells the powerful true story of boxer Harry Haft, who struggles to carry on with his life after fighting to survive in the Holocaust during World War II. Ben Foster takes on the role of Haft and it looks like this might be one of the best performances of his career.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
When the Nazis invade Poland in late 1939, Harry Haft (Foster) is sent to the Auschwitz extermination camp. He is a powerfully built man, so a charming but sadistic Nazi officer offers him an impossible deal: fight fellow prisoners in the boxing ring for the amusement of his captors, or die. The winner of the bout survives to fight again. The loser is shot or sent to the gas chamber. How far will Harry’s will to live take him? What will he do to escape the death all around him?
As you might imagine, this is going to be an intense and emotional film that shows the brutality of WWII, but it’s also going to tell an incredibly compelling story about survival.
The movie was directed by filmmaker Barry Levinson (Good Morning Vietnam, Rain Man, Bugsy, Toys, Wag the Dog, Sphere, Bandits, Man of the Year, The Bay), and the rest of the cast includes Danny DeVito, John Leguizamo, Peter Sarsgaard, Billy Magnussen, Paul Bates, and Anthony Molinari as Rocky Marciano, as well as Vicky Krieps.
The screenplay is written by Justine Juel Gillmer, based on Alan Haft’s book Harry Haft: Survivor of Auschwitz. It will be released on HBO Max on April 27th, 2022.
