PRIMAL Season 3 Finally Sets its Premiere Date and Reveals a Ferocious New Look at Spear

Fans of Genndy Tartakovsky have been waiting to see where Primal goes after its wild Season 2 finale, and now we finally have the date along with a fresh poster that gives us a fierce new glimpse at Spear’s next evolution.

If you’ve been craving more prehistoric mayhem, Adult Swim just delivered the news you’ve been hoping for.

The long awaited third season of Tartakovsky’s Primal is officially set to premiere on Sunday January 11 at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim. The episodes will drop on HBO Max the following day, keeping the show’s late night ritual intact.

Adult Swim offered a preview of what this next chapter holds: "The third season of “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” opens with a shocking twist that resurrects Spear in a new form—stripped of memory and humanity—and forces him to roam a brutal, untamed world as a shadow of his former self.

“As Spear battles savage landscapes and deadly foes, faint echoes of his past begin to stir, leading him toward an emotional and explosive reunion that will test the limits of survival."

Tartakovsky has said before that he was ready to step into anthology territory but a different idea took hold. He explained: "After two seasons, I was ready to move on until an idea surfaced that was pulpier, bad-ass, and undeniable. Everyone agreed and Season Three was born."

Season 2’s standout fifth episode, “The Primal Theory,” offered the first sign that Tartakovsky was itching to experiment. The episode’s shift to 1890s England and the brutal chaos that erupts inside a quiet scientific gathering turned out to be a kind of test flight for the creative pivot we’re about to see play out in full.

Of course there is still the jaw-dropping fact that Spear died at the end of Season 2, something Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen addressed, saying:

"I mean, not everyone can kill off their main character and then go ‘on second thought…’ and pull it off! But Genndy tends to not make things easy for himself, and what we get as a result is a season three that is more bonkers than the decision to kill Spear off in the first place!

“You thought there was emotion to the main character dying in season two, wait till you see what’s in store for season three."

While many story elements are still being kept secret, Tartakovsky confirmed that Spear and Fang’s offspring will appear and play a major part in the narrative. Beyond that, viewers can count on the same intense violence, stripped down storytelling approach, and immersive world that helped make Primal so awesome.
