Q&A with Felicia Day for THE GUILD: REN FAIRE'D Kickstarter
Felicia Day and the other Knights of Good recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to procure funding to make a movie for the hit internet series The Guild called The Guild: Ren Faire’d. I was given the exciting opportunity to ask Day some questions about the project and you can find those questions and answers below.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch The Guild yet, I’d highly recommend doing so. It’s available for free in its entirety on YouTube and the vast majority of episodes are under 10 minutes each. Go watch it and then check out the Kickstarter (fully funded in under 4 hours!) because they’ve got some really cool stuff!
It is important to note that these questions were submitted before the Kickstarter launched on July 20.
TW: Felicia, thank you so much for taking some time to answer questions. I'm a massive fan of yours and am excited for the return of The Guild with the 20th Anniversary Reunion Movie with the Kickstarter launching on July 20! How did you and the rest of the Knights of Good decide to reunite and launch this movie?
FD: I had the idea for a reunion movie when I noticed the calendar: Twenty years?! It's a big milestone. And the cast and I had such a great time playing games on Twitch together during Covid, I definitely wanted to keep that going with us, but back on screen somehow. The anniversary and a movie was the perfect way to do that.
TW: With The Guild making a comeback, are there any exciting plans besides the movie that fans can look forward to? Maybe new releases (a new music video perhaps?), remastering of the series, or anything else?
FD: We have a remastered Blu-Ray being offered, yes. As for other content, when we reach the stretch goal point, those things may or may not come into play ;)
TW: The Guild was released as a web series with short episodes (most have a runtime under 10 minutes). Has there been any thoughts or discussion if the movie will be a web release in smaller chunks (not necessarily 10-minute segments, but maybe 20 or 30-minutes) a la Dr. Horrible? Or are we looking for a more theatrical release?
FD: The number one thing on my mind is delivering the movie to backers. Aside from that, we would be offering this as a movie. I would love a theatrical release of some kind, but first and foremost is always our backers. Without them, there isn't a movie!
TW: Assuming the movie takes place roughly 14 years after the last episode, the Knights of Good would have gone through the COVID-19 pandemic (or possibly a similar type of situation). What would have been the obscure or niche hobby or thing that Cyd (and any of the other Knights of Good) started engaging in?
FD: I don't want to give anything away plot-wise. Rest assured the characters have lived rich lives in the meantime, and their stories may (or may not) reflect that. Sorry, my lips are sealed!
TW: Obviously, 20 years is a long time for one person. I imagine in the movie we'll see more of how Cyd has grown and evolved. What are some of the major ways that you feel you've grown and changed over the last 20 years and how could that impact Cyd?
FD: I have grown in so many ways. For one, I was able to write this script without crippling anxiety. I am able to navigate stress without collapsing. I hope that will rub off on Cyd but...maybe that isn't as funny. So don't count on it :D
TW: I would like to ask you about something not related to The Guild, if I may. Over the years, you have done so much amazing work. This includes being an onscreen actor, a voice actor, an audiobook narrator, an author, a comic book author, etc. Outside of The Guild what are 1-2 projects that you believe are some of your proudest career moments that fans should be sure to check out?
FD: I am most proud of my role in Dr. Horrible, because "The Guild" inspired an amazingly experienced Hollywood team to do an internet project and raised the bar on every level for digital content.
TW: My final question is one where I selfishly ask for recommendations. Is there any piece of media that you have watched, heard, played, or consumed in any way recently that you feel others would be remiss for not checking out?
FD: I discovered the "Dungeon Crawler Carl" book series in 2021 and have been a huge fan of lit RPG ever since. So excited to see it reach mainstream audiences this summer. If you want other great authors in the genre, try "Noobtown" series, "Primal Hunter" series and "Apocalypse Parenting". So many great authors in the space and I've read THEM ALL.
