Quentin Tarantino Straight Up Asked Tom Cruise How He Could Do a TOP GUN Sequel Without Original Director Tony Scott
Fans are getting excited for the Top Gun sequel that we were just lucky enough to get an awesome trailer for this week. But while some people are wondering why we are getting sequels for films from 30 years ago, another fan is wondering why we are getting a sequel without the director of the original film. That fan is none other than Quentin Tarantino.
In a recent conversation on the ReelBlend podcast at Cinema Blend, Tarantino talked about confronting his friend, and star of Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise. He said:
Well, you know, it's funny. I know Tom a little bit and I asked him about that. I was like, ‘I guess you're doing a Top Gun sequel?’ And he goes ‘Yeah, yeah, we're doing it.’ I go, ‘How can you do that without Tony [Scott]?’ And he was like, [[Sigh] I know.’ He goes, like, ‘I agree with that. I understand. That's how we always thought about it.’ But then, I think it was the guy who did Oblivion actually came up with this story. He goes, ‘He came up with a really great story. He came up with a great story that really worked that I really enjoy taking the character further in that way.’ And it was the script. He goes, ‘The answer to your question is the script. They came up with a really good idea.’
Talk about a guilt trip! But when you’re as cool as Tarantino, you can pretty much say whatever you want. I think it’s too bad that the sequel didn’t come together while Tony Scott was still alive. I just hope the movie honors his legacy and the characters he created by being really good. The trailer and the footage we saw this summer at Comic-Con definitely sold me, and I am stoked to see the film. Are you?
Top Gun: Maverick speeds into theaters on June 26, 2020.
