Quentin Tarantino Wanted to Make a LUKE CAGE Movie with Laurence Fishburne After RESERVOIR DOGS
After Quentin Tarantino made Reservoir Dogs in 1992, he was considering making a Luke Cage film with Laurence Fishburne in the lead role. It would have been so cool to see Tarantino make a Luke Cage movie, I would have loved to see his take on the character, especially in the 90s, long before comic book movies ruled Hollywood. While a guest on a recent episode of Amy Schumer’s podcast “3 Girls, 1 Keith,” Tarantino said:
“There was a time before all this Marvel shit was coming out. It was after ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ it was before ‘Pulp Fiction,’ and I had thought about doing ‘Luke Cage.’ Growing up I was a big comic-book collector, and my two favorite [comic books] were ‘Luke Cage: Hero for Hire,’ later ‘Luke Cage: Power Man,’ and ‘Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu.'”
So why didn’t he do it? Well, his “comic-geek friends” ruined the whole thing for him when they started questing his casting of Fishburne:
“I had an idea that Larry Fishburne would’ve been the perfect guy to play Luke Cage. But all my friends were like, ‘It’s got to be Wesley Snipes.’ And I go, ‘Look, I like Wesley Snipes, but Larry Fishburne is practically Marlon Brando. I think Fish is the man.’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah, but he’d have to get in shape in a big way. Snipes is that way already!’ And I go, ‘Fuck that! That’s not that important! Fuck you, you ruined the whole damn thing!’”
Yeah, Fishburne would have been so much more badass in the role! Tarantino was inspired. Unfortunately, the movie never happened and he went on to direct Pulp Fiction.
Would you have liked to see Tarantino make a Luke Cage movie with Laurence Fishburne!? I can only imagine it would have been badass.
