Quentin Tarantino's STAR TREK Film is an Earthbound 1930s Gangster Setting
Last week we learned that Paramount Pictures put Noah Hawley’s Star Trek film was being put on hold, but that Quentin Tarantino’s R-rated Star Trek movie was still in the works. Well, some new details have surfaced for Tarantino’s concept and I think fans are going to dig it.
According to Deadline, Tarantino’s movie “is based on an episode of the classic Star Trek series that takes place largely earthbound in a 1930s gangster setting.” Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) is writing the script for the film.
The episode that the report is talking about is titled “A Piece of the Action,” which was the seventeenth episode of Season 2. It aired on January 12, 1968. The story centered on Captain Kirk, Mr Spock and Dr McCoy as they beamed down to a planet called Iotia where they discover a planetary government patterned after the Chicago gangs of the 1920s.
I don’t know about you, but I sure would love to see Tarantino make this movie! An R-rated Star Trek 1930s gangster movie!? Sign me up! That’s would make for one hell of a cool Star Trek flick! Tarantino previously said that he wanted to bring some Pulp Fiction elements into the series as well. He also said:
“I don’t know if I’ll do it or not. I’ve got to figure it out, but Mark wrote a really cool script. I like it a lot. There’s some things I need to work on but I really, really liked it.”
Well, I personally hope that that this movie ends up getting made. I would love to see what kind of Star Trek story that Tarantino and Smith have come up with.
However, Tarantino has said that this is a project that he’s steering away from. He previously said, “I think they might make that movie, but I just don’t think I’m going to direct it. It’s a good idea. They should definitely do it and I’ll be happy to come in and give them some notes on the first rough cut.”
So, while it would be nice to see Tarantino direct the film, that may not happen. Even if he doesn’t direct it, the studio could still move forward with his story without him. I’m just happy to know that Paramount is still considering making it. How can they not! The concept is a great idea.
