Rainn Wilson Wants to Bring Plastic Man to Life in James Gunn’s DCU

With Superman kicking off a new chapter for DC Studios, fans are talking about what characters might show up next, and Rainn Wilson has a favorite he’s dying to bring to life.

The Office star recently revealed that he’s been campaigning to play none other than Plastic Man in James Gunn’s new DC Universe.

Speaking at Fan Expo Chicago, Wilson shared that he’s personally pitched the idea to Gunn, saying:

“I’ve hinted to James several times, like, ‘Hey man, you’ve got to do something with Plastic Man. He’s one of my favorite DC characters, and I loved him growing up.”

Plastic Man, aka Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, made his comic book debut back in 1941. Once a small-time crook, O’Brian’s life changed after a freak accident at a chemical plant gave him the power to stretch, morph, and bend his body in wild, cartoonish ways. Swapping crime for crimefighting, he became one of the most eccentric and entertaining heroes in the DC roster.

Wilson has always enjoyed the humor of the character, and he added:

“He had a wicked sense of humor. The Plastic Man comics were very, very funny. That would be a fun one to unearth.”

While there’s no official word from DC Studios about a Plastic Man project, Wilson’s enthusiasm for the idea is infectious. Even if he doesn’t land the role, he’s all in.

“I would be a fan even if I wasn’t in it. I would love to watch that… And play him.”

Wilson’s already on board with what Gunn’s building in the DCU. Speaking about Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor, he said:

“I thought that the LexCorp or LuthorCorp or whatever in the movie was great, how James created that as a big, monolithic, corporate entity. That was pretty cool.”

It’s clear Wilson is a big fan of Plastic Man, and his quirky charm might just work for the character. What do you think about Wilson possibly taking on the role of Plastic Man?
