RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET Directors Call the Disney Princess Spin-Off Rumor 'An Idea Worth Exploring'
My kids waited patiently for Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet to come out for quite a long time, and when it did, we went to the movie theater and saw it, which was a big deal because we usually go to the drive-in for every movie, since it’s cheaper and my youngest can be wild and not bother as many people. But we trekked in and saw the movie, and we all loved it! My very favorite part was when Vanellope was running from the Disney police, and stumbled into the Disney Princesses’ room, and was interrogated by them, with them ultimately deeming her worthy of the princess title, embracing her laidback style of dress, and teaching her how to sing a song to find out her destiny.
The whole scene was hilarious and filled with fun little nods to the princesses’ backgrounds and some tongue-in-cheek jokes at the expense of some of the things we’ve all thought were strange about Disney princess movies, i.e. no mothers, men trying to solve all their problems, not being able to understand Merida’s thick Scottish accent, etc. And then the ladies end up coming back into the story and helping things out, so it all comes full circle and reminds you that Disney princesses aren’t so helpless after all!
So when I heard rumors that Disney was thinking of maybe doing a spinoff movie about all the princesses together, I thought it was brilliant! And now we have some confirmation that it’s a possibility that is being considered!
Slashfilm reported that in an interview with The A.V. Club directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston explained how the Disney Princess scenes in the film have connected with audiences in a big way (Spoilers ahead):
“When you’re in Stockholm and they’re saying like, ‘Have you considered doing a movie just about the Princesses?’ I think it’s an idea worth exploring, because everywhere we go, we hear that response. ‘Oh my God, I love the Princesses like that.’ Not just the scene meeting Vanellope and talking about what it means to be a princess, but then to see them in action – it does feel like there’s something to that — that people are finally seeing the Princesses do what you’ve always believed they could do, but you’ve never seen it before.”
Then Moore went on to cool everyone’s jets by saying:
“I don’t know if there’s any conversations going on here seriously about [a spinoff], but we’ve definitely heard a lot of [positive response from the fans]. The fans are off the charts with the ideas that are out there.”
But just that it’s now on the minds of influencing people at Disney is enough for me! They don’t usually let a popular idea go by the wayside. I think it would be a super fun movie that my whole family would enjoy, and there is so much they could do with it!
Would you like to see this movie get made? Who is your favorite Disney princess? Mine is Merida, even if you can’t understand her!
