Ralph Macchio Says the KARATE KID Film Remake is Not Part of the "Miyagi-Verse," But a Hilary Swank Cameo in COBRA KAI Is Possible
The series Cobra Kai has been a total blast. The series is a love letter to fans of the movies, and it strikes the perfect balance of nostalgia and great storytelling, making it so much better than anyone expected a sequel series could be. Season three, which we got to see on New Years Day a year ago, was full of awesome cameos from within the films, and it made for the richest season. I loved the dive back into the worlds behind the dojos, and the people who pushed the show’s older generation of stars to be who they became.
It was my favorite season, and it really made people wonder if we could see more members of the Karate Kid universe in future seasons.
In a recent interview with YouTuber Jake's Takes (via /Film), series star Ralph Macchio, who plays Daniel LaRusso in the films and series, cleared up who we may or may not see make a cameo on the series. Some fans wondered whether the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid existed in the same universe, as well as the 1994 film, The Next Karate Kid, which starred Pat Morita and future Oscar-winner Hilary Swank. Macchio explained:
"Anyone who knew Mr. Miyagi and interacted with Mr. Miyagi is canon for our show, for the 'Cobra Kai' show. To the flip side of that, someone like Julie Pierce, who is Hilary Swank's role, did know Miyagi. So there's always a chance for maybe that."
So we definitely won’t be seeing any crossover with remake stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, but a return from Swank is not out of the question. This is good to know, as we enter the fourth season of the series. There’s about to be an epic showdown between the dojos, and it would be cool to eventually add another character to the series who would be willing to fight on the side of the good guys.
I got to see Cobra Kai season 4 a few weeks ago, and it’s awesome. But now I’m stuck waiting for season 5 to drop, and while we know the season is in the works, we also know we are at least a year out from seeing it. I love to know the creators and stars still have plenty of tricks up their sleeves, and I can’t wait to watch it all unfold.
Cobra Kai season 4 drops on Netflix this Friday. Check it out, and let us know if you’d be excited to see Swank’s Julie Pierce return to the Miyagi-verse.
