RAMAYANA Trailer Showcases an Visually Stunning Mythological Epic
The first full trailer for Ramayana has arrived, offering fans their most impressive look yet at Nitesh Tiwari's ambitious two-part adaptation of one of India's most celebrated epics.
If this footage is any indication, audiences are in for a massive cinematic event packed with breathtaking visuals, larger-than-life battles, and an emotional clash between good and evil.
With a reported combined budget of around $500 million across both films, Ramayana is shaping up to be one of the biggest productions ever mounted. Shot for IMAX, the scale on display certainly lives up to that promise.
The trailer opens by establishing the terrifying presence of Ravana, played by Yash, as the demon king declares his rule over heaven, earth, and the underworld. A narration lays the foundation for the story, explaining that whenever darkness threatens to consume the universe, Lord Vishnu takes human form to restore balance. That brings us to Ranbir Kapoor's Prince Rama, the eldest son of King Dasharatha, portrayed by Arun Govil.
From there, the trailer follows Rama as he accepts 14 years of exile to honor his father's promise. Accompanied by his wife Sita, played by Sai Pallavi, and his devoted brother Lakshmana, played by Ravi Dubey, the trio heads into the forest, where peace doesn't last for long.
The story takes a dramatic turn when Ravana's sister Surpanakha, played by Rakul Preet Singh, becomes infatuated with Rama. After being humiliated, she seeks revenge, prompting Ravana to intervene and restore his family's honor.
That decision sparks the chain of events that leads to Sita's abduction and sets the stage for a legendary war between righteousness and evil.
As the trailer builds toward its finale, it unleashes massive armies, mythological weapons, spectacular visual effects, and glimpses of the conflict that will define the saga. Rama vows to defeat Ravana across the three worlds and rescue Sita, teasing the beginning of what the film calls the era of Rama.
Ramayana Part 1 is expected to conclude with Sita's abduction, saving the rescue mission and the climactic war for Part 2.
The trailer made its debut during San Diego Comic-Con, where Kapoor, Yash, Tiwari, and producer Namit Malhotra took the stage to introduce the footage and discuss bringing this enormous project to life.
Prime Focus Studios is producing alongside Yash's Monster Mind Creations. Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are joining forces for the score, while DNEG, the eight-time Oscar-winning visual effects studio behind films including Dune, Interstellar, and Inception, is handling the visual effects.
Tiwari directs from a screenplay by Shridhar Raghavan. The filmmaker previously helmed Dangal, which remains the highest-grossing Indian film ever made.
The release strategy also carries special significance. Ramayana Part 1 arrives during the Diwali holiday this November, with Part 2 scheduled for Diwali 2027.
The timing connects directly to the epic itself, as Diwali commemorates Rama's return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over Ravana. The festival's tradition of lighting lamps symbolizes the celebration that welcomed Rama home.
