Rashida Jones Leaves TOY STORY 4 Citing Pixar's "Lack Of Creative Voice" For Minorities
When it was first announced Rashida Jones had exited the writing process of Toy Story 4, unnamed sources came forward and alleged that it was due to unwanted sexual advances by Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter. Now (via Indie Wire), Jones is setting the record straight, although her reasoning doesn't sound any less damning for Pixar. Jones and writing partner Will McCormack said the reason they left the project was due to a culture that prevented minorities and women from having an equal voice in the creative process:
“We did not leave Pixar because of unwanted advances. That is untrue. We parted ways because of creative and, more importantly, philosophical differences. There is so much talent at Pixar, and we remain enormous fans of their films. However, it is also a culture where women and people of color do not have an equal creative voice...We hope we can encourage all those who have felt like their voices could not be heard in the past to feel empowered.
Not the best look for Pixar at the moment, who is also dealing with the allegations that were made public against John Lasseter. Lasseter has stepped temporarily stepped down from his position at Pixar, and it's unknown at this time how Jones and McCormack's leaving will affect Toy Story 4.
