Ray Liotta, Scott Eastwood, and Tyrese Gibson are set to star in an upcoming thriller set during the Los Angeles Riots titled April 29, 1992.

The film takes place on the first night of the riots, “centering on a custodian who brings his son to work. The two quickly find themselves in the middle of a heist gone wrong.” Gibson will star opposite on-screen father and son Liotta and Eastwood.

The movie is being directed by Ariel Vromen, who previously helmed Michael Shannon’s mob thriller The Iceman. The script for the movie comes from Sacha Penn (Creed 2).

Producers want to release the film in 2022 to mark the 30th anniversary of the riots that rocked LA for nearly a week. The riots erupted following the acquittal of four LAPD officers for the use of excessive force in the arrest and beating of Rodney King. In the wake of the riots there were 63 deaths, more than 12,000 arrests, and over $1 billion in property damages for the city.

I remember when this happened. I remember standing in my front yard watching smoke rise out of the burning city of L.A. It’s going to be interesting to see how this movie handles that crazy part of L.A.’s history.
