READING RAINBOW Returns with Mychal the Librarian Bringing the Magic to a New Generation
For over two decades, Reading Rainbow was a staple of childhood for countless kids. It’s a show that I grew up watching, and I enjoyed it. Hosted by the legendary LeVar Burton, the PBS series didn’t just entertain, it sparked a lifelong love of reading. Now, the classic show is officially returning with a brand-new host, and there’s even a trailer for you to watch.
Stepping into the spotlight is Mychal Threets, better known online as “Mychal the Librarian.” A public library advocate and TikTok star, Threets has built a passionate following by making books and reading feel exciting, relatable, and welcoming.
While Burton won’t be back as host this time, producers clearly found someone who carries the same heartfelt enthusiasm for storytelling.
Judging from the announcement teaser, the new series will stay true to the original formula. We even get a glimpse at some of the celebrity guests who will be stopping by, including Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Fantastic Four: First Steps), John Legend, Adam DeVine, and Gabrielle Union.
Of course, one big question lingers for fans: will the iconic theme music return? It’s hard to think about Reading Rainbow without instantly hearing those unforgettable words, “Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high…”
The original series first aired in 1983 and ran until 2006, helping generations of kids discover the joy of books. Much like Sesame Street, it was a cultural cornerstone. With literacy rates declining among kids today, this reboot couldn’t come at a better time.
We don’t have an exact release date yet, but from the looks of it, much of the new season has already been filmed. Here’s hoping this fresh chapter of Reading Rainbow has a long run ahead, inspiring a whole new generation to open up a book and dive in.
