RED SONJA Movie Starts Production with Matilda Lutz in the Lead Role

The live-action Red Sonja film adaptation has been on the long road of development. But, after several issues, delays, and talent changes, the movie has finally started shooting, and it has a new director and star.

Joey Soloway (Transparent) was originally supposed to direct the film with Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s Hannah John Kamen set to star. But now M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane, Silent Hill: Revelation) is directing the movie and Matilda Lutz (Revenge) is set to take on the role of Red Sonja.

I loved Lutz in the movie Revenge, and I think she’s going to be badass in the role of Red Sonja! The director talked about the project and shared in a statement saying:

“I’ve wanted to make a Red Sonja movie since I was a teenager. She has been a powerful presence for me and a character that I have always wanted to bring to the screen with my own voice and vision. When I met Matilda Lutz, I knew she had all the magic I was looking for and could see the complexity and depth she would bring to Sonja.”

Well, I hope this creative team actually pulls it off and makes a great Red Sonya film! Wallis Day also stars in the film and will play Sonja’s “wicked half-sister,” Annisia, and Robert Sheehan will play Draygan. The rest of the cast includes Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El-Feitury, and Katrina Durden.

No story details were shared, but the inclusion of the character Annisia suggests that the movie may take its cues from Gail Simone and artist Walter Geovani’s Red Sonja comic book run from Dynamite Entertainment.

There’s no release date for the film yet, but with do you think about Matilda Lutz as Red Sonja?
