Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling Joining Ava DuVernay's A WRINKLE IN TIME

After passing on Black Panther, Selma director Ava DuVernay ended up deciding to work with Disney directing a film adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's Newberry Medal-winning book A Wrinkle in Time. She's already cast her Selma actress Oprah Winfrey in a supporting role, and now THR reports that Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling are in negotiations to take two other supporting parts that would round out a trio of characters from the book.

A Wrinkle in Time is about a young girl, her younger brother, and her friend who go on a search for her missing father, a government scientist who was working on a top secret project involving an inter-dimensional tesseract. Joining the girl on her journey are three supernatural beings: Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Whatsit. THR has the breakdown for casting each of these parts:

Witherspoon will play Mrs. Whatsit, a former celestial being who looks like a grandmotherly hobo, and Kaling will play the literature-quoting Mrs. Who. The duo will join Oprah Winfrey, who is already on board to play Mrs. Which.

I remember loving an excerpt of this book I read back in an elementary school language arts book, but I never made time to track down the actual book and read the whole thing. But it's clearly a beloved book, and it means a whole lot to a whole lot of people.

Filming is set to begin in Los Angeles this November, and though the movie doesn't have an official release date yet, Disney has carved out release dates for two live action films on August 3, 2018 and December 25, 2018. If I had to guess now, I'd put this as one of the studio's big Christmas releases that year.
