Reese Witherspoon Gives Update on LEGALLY BLONDE Prequel Series and Talks About the Casting Process

Not only is Reese Witherspoon getting ready to return to play her iconic character Elle Woods in the sequel Legally Blonde 3, but she’s also working on producing a prequel Legally Blonde series that will take the character all the way back to high school.

Witherspoon gave an update on the show, which she says was inspired by her love of the Netflix series Wednesday, in a recent appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

She talked about the casting process, saying, “Now it’s different because we used to audition, and we’d go into a casting office. Now they have to shoot, produce, do all the costumes [for auditions].

“They have to put together videos that are basically like a mini movie. It’s crazy!” She expressed enthusiasm about the talented actors, stating that those who are auditioning are “killing it,” making the final selection “a really hard decision.”

Creator and showrunner Laura Kittrell (Insecure, Black Monday) will executive produce alongside Witherspoon through her Hello Sunshine banner. The project aims to reveal “the life experiences that shaped [Elle] into the iconic young woman we came to know and love.”

Witherspoon talked about her inspiration for the show, stating, “I saw that Wednesday Addams show and I was like, ‘Oh, she was in high school.’ I loved it. I watched every episode. And I was like, ‘We should do Elle Woods in high school because I wanted to see who she was before college, before law school.’”

Witherspoon announced the show last year on Instagram, stating, “Before she became the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law, she was just a regular ’90s high school girl. And all of you are going to get to know her…”

The Legally Blonde series will stream exclusively on Prime Video. Stay tuned for updates on casting, story, and the show’s release date.
