Kevin Costner Will Not Return to the Final Episodes of YELLOWSTONE Season 5

There has been so much controversy surrounding Kevin Costner in his final season of the hit drama series Yellowstone. The show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, has done a good job of keeping the peace with the show’s patriarch, but it looks like Costner is officially not returning to the final episodes of the show, and everyone is pretty frustrated. Luckily, it doesn’t sound like his decision is affecting the story.

Last week, we reported that it was rumored Costner wouldn’t appear in the final episodes, set to shoot in early 2024, but now it’s official.

Previous reports say that Costner only wanted to spend a week shooting the second batch of Season 5 episodes, as opposed to the 50-65 days that he has in the past.

Sheridan previously said of the issue:

"I'm disappointed. It truncates the closure of his character. It doesn't alter it, but it truncates it... I don't do f-ck you car crashes. Whether [Dutton's] fate inflates [Costner's] ego or insults is collateral damage that I don't factor in with regard to storytelling."

It’s nice to know that this decision doesn’t throw Sheridan’s story off course, and he even had the following to say about the actor:

"My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn't altered. His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful … and I've never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn't work out on the phone. But once lawyers get involved, then people don't get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren't true and attempt to shift blame based on how the press or public seem to be reacting. He took a lot of this on the chin and I don't know that anyone deserves it. His movie seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus. I sure hope [the movie is] worth it — and that it's a good one."

I hope so too. You’d think he could give a month or two to close out the character, and give the show a proper farewell, but who knows all the ins and outs of his decisions. Hopefully the series ends well by opinion of the fans, and Costner goes on to make one hell of a good movie.
