Reports Indicate the Live-Action AKIRA Will Shoot This Summer

Are you a fan of Akira? Do you like Taika Waititi’s films? Great news, then. Waititi is set to direct a live-action adaptation of the acclaimed manga and anime with filming said to begin on July 15! This news comes from Discussing Film, and I know many who will be excited. Don’t know what Akira is? Here’s a quick synopsis:

In 1988 the Japanese government drops an atomic bomb on Tokyo after ESP experiments on children go awry. In 2019, 31 years after the nuking of the city, Kaneda, a bike gang leader, tries to save his friend Tetsuo from a secret government project. He battles anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader until Tetsuo’s supernatural powers suddenly manifest. A final battle is fought in Tokyo Olympiad exposing the experiment’s secrets.

In addition to directing, Waititi will be co-writing the screenplay with Michael Golamco. Who should they get for the cast?
