Retro Trailer For The 1977 Film PLANET OF THE DINOSAURS Delivers Sci-Fi Creature Chaos
If you love vintage sci-fi creature features, the 1977 cult film Planet of the Dinosaurs is a fun blast from the past. This week's retro trailer is for this movie, which drops a group of space travelers onto a hostile prehistoric world filled with dinosaurs and other deadly creatures.
Directed by James K. Shea, the low-budget sci-fi adventure leans fully into its premise as the stranded crew quickly realizes the planet they’ve crash-landed on is basically a dinosaur-infested nightmare.
What makes Planet of the Dinosaurs especially memorable is its impressive stop-motion dinosaur effects created by Jim Danforth, who previously worked on films like When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth.
For a modestly budgeted movie, the creature work is surprisingly solid and gives the film a lot of its charm. Also, I love that one of the ships clearly has has Millennium Falcon elements.
The story follows the survivors as they try to adapt, build shelter, and stay alive while being hunted by massive prehistoric predators. It’s the kind of scrappy ‘70s sci-fi movie that’s rough around the edges but packed with creature-feature fun, and the trailer is a great reminder of just how wild these old-school dinosaur movies could get.
