Retro Trailer For The 1985 Horror Film THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD
This week’s etro trailer is for the classic 1985 zombie horror film The Return of the Living Dead. They reason I wanted to share this trailer this weekend is in celebration of Independence Day with punk rock zombies, toxic gas, and brain-eating mayhem.
That’s right. In honor of July 4th, we're throwing it back to Dan O'Bannon’s The Return of the Living Dead, which is set on July 3rd, the night before America’s birthday.
This outrageous splatterfest kicks off in a Louisville medical supply warehouse where a couple of bumbling employees accidentally release a military-grade gas called Trioxin-245. The result? Corpses that don’t stay dead and a night full of unrelenting, undead chaos, and these zombies run, they speak, and they have one thing on their minds: BRAAAINS.
From the moment the gas leaks into a nearby cemetery and starts resurrecting the dead, it’s non-stop insanity. The punk rock cast including scream queen Linnea Quigley in one of the most iconic cemetery stripteases in horror history.
Meanwhile, genre veterans Clu Gulager, James Karen, and Don Calfa anchor the madness with performances that shift effortlessly between comedy and genuine dread.
But what I really love about The Return of the Living Dead is its rebellious energy. It’s horror with a punk attitude, and it includes a killer soundtrack featuring The Cramps, 45 Grave, and TSOL. It’s a movie that flips the bird at horror conventions, laughs in the face of authority, and still manages to deliver some scary fun.
Oh, and I should also mention that it gave us the now-legendary idea that zombies eat brains because it alleviates the pain of being dead.
Nothing screams “America” quite like a military cover-up, a city-wide zombie outbreak, and the nihilistic twist of a nuclear finale. So grab a cold drink, crank up the punk rock, and hit play on the trailer below. It’s time to salute the undead heroes of July 3rd.
