Retro Trailer For The Bonkers 1984 Fantasy Adventure Film PERILS OF GWENDOLINE IN THE LAND OF THE YIK YAK
This week’s retro trailer is for the bonkers 1984 campy classic Perils of Gwendoline, also known as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik-Yak. The adventure fantasy film was directed by Just Jaeckin, yep, that is his name. The movie is loosely based on the bondage-themed French comic book series "Sweet Gwendoline" created by John Willie.
The story follows the journey of Gwendoline (Tawny Kitaen), a young woman who travels to China in search of her missing father, an explorer. Along the way, she encounters Beth (2), a thief who becomes her companion. Together, they embark on an expedition to find the hidden city of the Yik-Yak, a mythical place rumored to be filled with treasure.
As Gwendoline and Beth venture deeper into the dangerous and exotic landscapes, they face numerous perils and challenges. They encounter pirates, slave traders, and even a treacherous tribe of Amazonian women. Along the way, Gwendoline's naïveté and vulnerability are tested, and she discovers her inner strength and resilience.
The film blends elements of action, adventure, and eroticism, and features scenes of bondage and fetishism, which reflect the influence of the original comic book series. The film has a light-hearted tone, though, with cheesy comedic moments and fun adventure.
Perils of Gwendoline received mixed reviews and while some enjoyed the movie, others criticized its uneven pacing and portrayal of women. As you might expect, the movie was a commercial failure, but the film gained a cult following over the years.
