RETURN TO SILENT HILL Director Promises a Faithful Adaptation of the Iconic PS2 Game
If you’re a Silent Hill fan who’s still nursing old wounds from the 2012 film adaptation, Silent Hill: Revelation, there’s reason to be cautiously optimistic for the next film, Return To Silent Hill.
Director Christophe Gans, the same filmmaker behind the original 2006 movie, which was a great film, is returning to helm Return to Silent Hill, which is a new live-action take on Silent Hill 2, and this time he's promising to play things straight with the source material.
According to Variety, the film will get a theatrical release in the U.S., with Cineverse acquiring distribution rights. What’s more interesting is Cineverse’s promise that Return to Silent Hill will be “a faithful adaptation of the video game Silent Hill 2.”
Here’s the official premise for the film: “James, a man broken after his relationship with the love of his life, Mary, ends. When a mysterious letter from her calls him back to Silent Hill, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil.
“While James desperately searches for Mary he encounters terrifying creatures and begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to the town. But as he descends deeper into the darkness the secrets he uncovers lead to a horrifying truth, and James finds himself struggling to hold on long enough to save his one true love.”
The movie is sure to deliver a fog-drenched descent into psychological terror. The cast includes Jeremy Irvine (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) as James Sunderland and Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw) as Mary.
Director Gans seems fully aware of the responsibility that comes with adapting such a beloved title. He stated:
“I am delighted to partner with Cineverse, which has shown a genuine understanding of fanship. Return to Silent Hill is an adaptation created out of deep respect for a true masterpiece of a game, Konami's iconic Silent Hill 2. I hope fans will enjoy and be fulfilled with the experience this new film has to offer.”
It sounds like Gans will deliver another great Silent Hill movie, and as a longtime fan of this franchise, I’m excited to watch it!
