Review: A Time of Knight for Power Rangers RPG — GeekTyrant

Review: A TIME OF KNIGHT is a Good Introduction to Time Travel for POWER RANGERS RPG

A black knight stands in front of a Dragon ready to unleash a raging fire on the knight’s enemies.

I love going over materials for the Power Rangers Roleplaying Game and I’m here to talk about one of the pre-built adventures: A Time of Knight.

This adventure was released last year and is a really good companion to the time travel sourcebook, A Jump Through Time (my review incoming). You do need the Core Rulebook in order to play, but if you like what you read, you can purchase A Time of Knight now from your local game store, Renegade’s web store, or even DriveThruRPG (affiliate link). Renegade did supply me with a copy of the adventure, but all thoughts below are my own.

“When Power Rangers learn about the Black Knight’s scheme to rule the future, they must face the past to stand a chance against the Knight’s draconic dynasty! Can the Rangers overcome the knight’s sinister allies, recover magic artifacts, and prevail against a timeless evil?”

A Time of Knight is an adventure designed for 4-6 level five Power Rangers and includes five new threats for GMs to incorporate into their Essence20 adventures. The adventure has five chapters to play through and does involve some time travel shenanigans.

Two of the chapters can be played in either order where the Rangers have to visit Colonial Angel Grove and the Wild West (shoutout to “Wild West Rangers”).

Honestly, going through A Time of Knight has been a lot of fun. I haven’t had the chance to play through it, but reading through it I definitely think it would be fun for a group who wants to play around with some time travel.

I fear I’ve already said too much without a spoiler tag so I’ll leave it at: I think it will be a fun adventure for fans of the Power Rangers RPG.

Now that I can talk more in depth (thanks Spoiler Alert!) let us dig in. Essentially, the Black Knight shows up raising a lot of confusion for the Rangers prompting them to investigate matters. They then meet the White Knight who helps them travel back in time in order to collect pieces of the adventure’s MacGuffin (the Wizard of Deception’s wand). This involves going back to the aforementioned time periods (and meeting some ancestors of Tommy Oliver), defeating monsters who shouldn’t be there, etc. Once the Rangers have the MacGuffin they can aim to stop the Black Knight.

There are a couple of things that I enjoy about A Time of Knight. First, you have two opportunities to fight a dragon! There’s also Red Coat Putty Patrollers which is just hilarious to me. I also appreciate the nods to the television show with things like the White Stranger. From the GMs perspective, I do appreciate that the Essence20 team includes advice for adjusting each encounter to better match your table.

I do honestly believe that Power Rangers RPG fans will enjoy A Time of Knight if they haven’t played it yet. It is fairly straightforward, but would serve as a fantastic introduction to time travel in your campaign whether it be a one-off thing or maybe leading your Rangers to be more involved with Time Force as you lean more and more into the time travel.
