Review: APOLLO GAUNTLET Is A Delightful Marriage Of 80s Saturday Morning Cartoons And The Ramblings Of A Canadian
Apollo Gauntlet is a delightful marriage of 80s Saturday morning cartoons you loved growing up and the ramblings of a Canadian. Check out the trailer and continue on below for more:
Paul Cassidy is an ex-cop transported to a world not unlike He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe. The real difference comes in the form of Cassidy, who finds a suit and transforms into the mighty Apollo Gauntlet. Using super powers and an incredibly specific and obscure sense of humor, Apollo Gauntlet saves his new home time and time again with little recognition from those around him.
While the 80s cartoon vibe is a nice touch, Paul Cassidy/Apollo Gauntlet is the gem that makes this series truly shine. His references appear random, but in truth they're just the everyday thoughts that run through the head of creator of the series Myles Langlois. Pro wrestling, Hall & Oates, even Ukranian boxer Vladimir Klitschko gets a shout out. Sometimes the references will fly over your head, but the ones that land will make you laugh way harder than you have any right to.
Beyond the oddball dialogue of Apollo Gauntlet, the show itself has some uniquely funny moments reminiscent of Sealab 2021 and other shows of that nature. If you liked those shows, this is definitely a series you'll want to check out.
I'm not going to sit here and act like this series is the best thing since Rick and Morty, but I will say Apollo Gauntlet is a step back towards the original programming that drew me into Adult Swim way back in the day, and I hope we see a lot more of it down the road. I especially need to see some more Apollo Gauntlet, as I feel like this will be a series that only gets better with time.
Apollo Gauntlet airs Sundays at 12:15 a.m. on Adult Swim. Watch it there or watch the entire series on their website right now!
