Review: ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET Is a Delightful Love Letter to Judy Blume Fans of All Ages
I got the chance to see the film adaptation of the best-selling coming of age novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret in the theatre ahead of its premiere this week, and it was fantastic. Anyone who was a kid (especially a girl) on the cusp of adolescence from 1970-on has a good good chance of having been shaped by this Judy Blume book, which talks about everything a kid could face- from a developing body, or lack thereof, to religion, crushes, friendships, questions about life itself, and the emotions and changes that come with hitting puberty.
This movie covered it all. It took me right back to when I first read the book some almost 30 years ago, and the subsequent revisits, to raising my own daughter, and even the traumas and questions I continue to face or relive as an adult.
The film reminds us what a sometimes terrifying time it is to be a kid, while other moments like summer camp, a first kiss, a right of passage, makes it all worth it.
I will definitely be rewatching this film with my daughter and my sister and I recommend it to anyone who likes a slice of life story with humor and hardship and beautiful acting to pull it all together. The filmmakers behind the movie certainly grasped what Blume has been reaching audiences with for the past 50 years, and I am so grateful.
Go see Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret in theaters this Friday.
