Review: Denis Villeneuve's DUNE Is Truly an Epic Masterpiece

Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic Dune has finally been released! Fans have been waiting to see this movie for a long time, and I’m happy to say that the movie was well worth the wait! Villeneuve is one hell of a talented filmmaker, and I was confident that he would deliver a great Dune movie, and he did! The filmmaker ended up making an epic masterpiece!

People have said that it’s an impossible task to properly adapt Dune, but Villeneuve pulled it off, and I was completely blown away by the movie. He managed to perfectly capture the spirit of the novel and did an amazing job telling the story… at least the first part of it. Damn, I really hope that he gets to make the sequel because this first film definitely leaves the audience on a bit of a cliffhanger.

The story follows Paul Atreides, a gifted young man who is born to a great destiny beyond his understanding. He finds himself on a journey on the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. Evil forces are working against Paul and his family, though, and a war begins over the planet's exclusive supply of Spice, the most precious resource in existence.

The story of Dune is awesome, but seeing it brought to life the way the film does is breathtaking. The visuals that we see in the film and the cinematography were absolutely stunning! I was just blown away seeing the all of the elements of this story brought to life, it’s crazing to see all of those insane locations and ships from the book brought to life for real! Villeneuve completely nailed the visual aspect of the story and I’m not really sure anyone else would’ve been able to pull it off.

Then you’ve got all of the freakin’ talented actors that star in the film! Every one was perfectly cast in the roles that they played. That cast includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Zendaya as Chani, Stellan Skarsgard as Baron Harkonnen, Javier Bardem as tribe leader Stilgar, Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam, David Dastmcalchian as Piter De Vries, Chang Chen as Dr. Yueh, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Liet-Kynes, and Dave Bautista as the Baron’s nephew Rabban.

Every actor in the film gave a flawless performance, but I have to point out that Chalamet killed it in the role of Paul. He perfectly fit the character as described in the book.

I couldn’t be happier with how Dune turned out. This is a movie that I’ll be watching multiple times in the theater. The movie is available to watch on HBO Max, but this movie was meant to be seen on the big screen! I don’t know why anyone would want to watch this movie at home. If you do, you’re missing out one of the most awesome theatrical movie going experiences since The Lord of the Rings.
