Review: DOWNTON ABBEY Is a Wonderfully Perfect Continuation of The Series
I was one of those people who jumped in late to the Downton Abbey craze. I didn’t start watching the series until after Season 5. It seemed like the kind of show that I would have absolutely no interest in, but after hearing how great it was from everyone I know, I had to give it a shot.
Little did I know, I would get completely sucked in and hooked with the story and its characters. It’s just such a great series that was written extremely well and filled with wonderful and interesting characters that I wanted to get to know more about.
Well, if you’re like me and you enjoyed the series, you’re going to love the Downton Abbey movie! Not only was it great to see all of these characters again and see their story arcs continue, but it was just a perfectly made film and all of our favorite characters were perfectly handled.
There are a lot of characters to follow that were introduced in the series over the years and each one has a story that is being told. It amazed me how well the filmmakers, Julian Fellowes (Creator and Writer) and Michael Engler (Director), juggled all these characters and gave each of them the perfect amount of screen time to move their stories forward. It’s not an easy feat, but they sure made it look easy with this movie!
The story, script, and direction were top-notch and the story includes many of the things we love about the movies. It was filled with drama, comedy, and there was even a little adventurous thrilling subplot thrown in for good measure.
The story follows the Crawley family as they must prepare to host King George V and Queen Mary who are coming to stay with them for a short visit. But trouble soon arises when Mrs. Patmore, Daisy and the rest of the servants learn that the king and queen travel with their own chefs and attendants. This sets the stage for a little scheming and other fun shenanigans that audiences and fans will enjoy.
Now that I’ve been reacquainted with these characters, I hope that this isn’t the last that we see of them. I hope that we get to see the stories of these characters continue in another film at some point down the road. This film certainly leaves some things open at the end, but if this is the final story for Downton Abbey, it could also serve as a fitting conclusion.
It seems like it’s weird for me to say, but Downton Abbey is one of my favorite films of the year and fans are going to love it!
