Review: Edgar Wright's LAST NIGHT IN SOHO Is a Haunting and Unique Horror Thriller

I was super excited when I learned that Edgar Wright was going to direct a horror film. I’m a huge fan of the filmmaker and his films, and I’ve always wondered what Wright would do in the horror genre, and now, a few years later, the film his film Last Night in Soho has finally been released! We now get to see what an Edgar Wright horror drama looks like, and you’ll be happy to here it’s an incredible and well-made film!

The story the Wright set out to tell is awesomely unique and haunting. I’ve never quite seen anything like it before, and it delivers some genuinely creepy thrills. On top of that, the whole mystery of the story is going to keep audiences on the edge of their seat! At least it did for me!

The movie tells the story of a young girl named Ellie (Thomasin McKenzie) from the country who moves to London to go to fashion school to become a fashion designer. She is obsessed with the 1960s and when she moves into a new apartment she mysteriously enters the 1960s when she falls asleep. She becomes obsessed with a young woman named Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy), who is looking to accomplish her dream of being a professional singer and dancer. What starts out as a fun and exciting experience for Ellie turns into a dark nightmare.

The film starts out incredibly charmingly, and you immediately fall in love with Ellie, but that charming aspect of the film quickly descends into complete madness. I won’t get into any spoilers, but the story takes some surprising and interesting twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and there are a couple of big reveals near the end that I didn’t suspect. I love movies like that, and this one does it so well!

Then there’s the whole visual style of the film. The style of it came straight from the classic psychedelic colorful horror movies from the ‘60s. It was super vibrant, and there were also some trippy cool things that Wright pulled off visually. This was just an all around great-looking film and an incredibly fun moviegoing experience.

As for the acting, Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy both gave brilliant and enjoyable performances. The movie also stars Matt Smith, Synnøve Karlsen, Michael Ajao, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, and Rita Tushingham.

If you’re a fan of Edgar Wright and his films, if you enjoy a good horror movie, Last Night in Soho is a film that you’re going to want to watch. You’ll enjoy it!
