Review: Emilia Clarke's MOTHER OF MADNESS #1 is a Great Start to a Superpowered Mom Story
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) has made her comics debut with Mother of Madness #1. Clarke has teamed up with co-writer Marguerite Bennett, artist Leila Leiz, and publisher Image Comics to bring this story to life. Image was kind enough to provide me with a digital copy of the comic to review. In M.O.M.: Mother of Madness, the mayhem begins with Maya, under-the-weather scientist by day, over-the-top superhero by night, and badass single mom 24/7.
Deadpool action collides with Fleabag comedy when Maya activates her freakish superpowers to take on a secret sect of human traffickers.
M.O.M. will be a three-issue story and this is a pretty great opener. The first issue has 42 pages of story that introduces us to a world that really doesn’t feel much different than our own despite it taking place in the future. The comic definitely has some Deadpool-like fourth wall breaking humor that some fans will love and others won’t. Overall, I thought it was fine but I did feel like it was hard to understand at times whether Maya (the main character) was talking to someone else in the comic or to the reader. I wish there had been something like a different colored speech bubble or something to help.
I do appreciate the letter that Clarke adds at the end, the explanation via chart shared about Maya’s powers, and the list of resources to help others facing problems like rape, trafficking, hate crimes, abuse, and more. Please, if you or someone you know needs support, don’t be afraid to reach out to the proper groups.
I like Leiz’s art for M.O.M. It’s not my favorite comic art, but it does have its own charm and works well. Triona Farrell provided the colors for the comic and it’s very well done.
Overall, M.O.M. #1 is a fantastic start and has great potential. I think Clarke’s story is one that many people are going to connect with. I can’t wait for the next issue to release on August 25.
