Review: HEROES REBORN #1 Is an Incredible Start to a Whole New Marvel Mystery
Marvel has released Heroes Reborn #1, which marks the start of a new adventure. Blade is now in a world where the Avengers never formed, and it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. The Squadron Supreme help protect the world. Are they the right ones for the job though? The story comes from Jason Aaron with art by Ed McGuinness. Marvel was kind enough to supply me with a copy of the comic to read and I wanted to share some spoiler-free thoughts with you.
HEROES REBORN will present a world where the Avengers never assembled and the Squadron Supreme took their place as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The exciting —and unsettling — ripple effect the Avengers' absence has on the rest of the Marvel Universe will be explored throughout the series as well as thrilling one-shots, revealing the history behind the new reality of your favorite heroes and laying the groundwork for its unpredictable future.
My first thoughts are that I really like this. There’s a big mystery element to it right now, but there’s also the big bad guy threats of Dr. Juggernaut, Thanos, the Silver Witch, and more that comic fans love to see. It is funny to me that the Squadron Supreme are all Justice League clones as if to say that Blade has traveled from the Marvel Universe to the DC Universe. I don’t want to reduce them in this comparison, it’s just that as someone relatively new to reading Marvel comics, that’s how it feels and I actually really like it.
Heroes Reborn #1 is really heavy on setting things up like one might assume, but it also has plenty of things happening that it doesn’t feel forced or slow. The build up feels like a very solid pace and I feel like I get just enough information to be appeased and still have plenty of questions to continue reading the series.
I also love McGuinness’ art that was inked by Mark Morales, and Matthew Wilson’s coloring is also topnotch. Every page is a thrill to look at.
So far, I’m actually loving Heroes Reborn and would recommend it to Marvel fans or even comic fans in general. There are times where things that happen or things that are said feel a little weird and more like something you’d see or read from an older comic, it also somehow feeds this mystery that we’re in. Almost like it’s a clue or something.
