Review: Jordan Peele's Horror Film US Dives Into Insanely Wicked Madness

Director Jordan Peele has delivered another awesomely creepy horror film with Us, and delivers something that a lot of horror fans are going to love.

I loved what Peele did with Get Out, and I was hoping he would be able to deliver another top-notch film that would be just as good as his first movie. Well, he pulled it off! I know that some people felt Get Out was a one hit wonder for the director, but Peele has proved once again that he’s got an amazing talent for telling stories and directing films!

Us tells a story that is so insane and messed up and it takes a few twists and turns that I did not expect. However, there is one big reveal at the end that was pretty predictable, especially if you’ve watched the trailers. After seeing the film, I realized that the trailers give away way too much because I figured out the big reveal within the first 15 minutes of the film. Regardless, it didn’t ruin the viewing experience for me. It’s still a great movie!

I won’t go into any spoiler details, but the basic plot follows a family who goes on vacation to Santa Cruz, which is where Lupita Nyong'o’s character Adelaide had a traumatic experience as a child. While on vacation, she has a bad feeling that her past is going to come back and haunt her, and as you’ve seen in the trailer, her worst fears become a reality. The family is terrorized by a group of evil doppelgängers that want to kill them.

Where did these people come from? Who are they? Why do they want to kill the family? All your questions will be answered when you watch the film, and I will say… the story plays out in a very surprising way.

I will say that the movie didn’t really scare me that much, but I’m kinda desensitized by horror films. I’m sure it will freak general audiences out. For me, I was just completely engulfed in its intriguing and unique story. It’s also filled with some funny comedic moments which help lighten the mood when things get intense. They are well-placed comedic moments that are sure to make audiences laugh. You can’t have a Jordan Peele movie and not have a few laughs!

As for the acting, Lupita Nyong'o gave two freakin’ amazing performances! All of the actors play two roles in the film, their normal selves and their sinister doppelgängers, but Nyong'o’s performances just shined and is Best Actress material. The movie also starred Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Evan Alex, and Shahadi Wright Joseph and they all offered up impressive performances.

If you liked Peele’s Get Out, then you’re going to like Us as well. This is a movie you won’t want to miss on the big screen. I’m looking forward to seeing what audiences end up thinking about this movie.
