Review: KID COSMIC is Out of This World Amazing

I know, I know. I’m a little late to the party. Back in February, Netflix released a new series from Craig McCracken (The Powerpuff Girls) called Kid Cosmic. I finally was able to watch the series and guys, it’s amazing. If you haven’t watched it yet, I would highly encourage you to do so. There is currently one season that lasts for 10 episodes. It’s not a big commitment.

A boy’s superhero dreams come true when he finds five powerful cosmic stones. But saving the day is harder than he imagined – and he can’t do it alone.

Visually, Kid Cosmic has a very fun look and feel. The outlines and a lot of the backgrounds have a look as if drawn with a pencil or maybe even crayon where the lines are a little broken up. Then, the colors are typically very simple. It works really well for the series.

The sound work for Kid Cosmic is also top notch. On top of great musical choices, the voice cast is amazing with heavy hitters like Keith Ferguson (DuckTales) and Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants). There’s really nothing to complain about here either.

This leads us to the story. McCracken is phenomenal at his job and the writing team he has for Kid Cosmic really steps up to the plate. We start off with more goofy episodes as we settle into this world and then things just get real and you can’t turn it off until it’s over. I was watching the show at a pace of 1-2 episodes a night and then I binged episodes 6-10. The story is incredible and some of the themes are very relatable. Feeling unwanted, feeling forgotten, having your life turned upside down, these are a few of the journeys that we get to see our characters go on. The characters start very flat, but quickly turn three-dimensional and extremely relatable.

The characters are amazing. Papa G is the lovable hippy grandfather that seems to have some skeletons in his closet, Jo is a teenager who just wants to get out of the middle of nowhere, Kid is the super enthusiastic child, Rosa is the neighbor girl who just wants friends, and then there’s Stuck Chuck. Chuck is my favorite character. He is a villain that the heroes capture and he’s always doling out witty comments and wisecracks, poking fun at the heroes.

If you haven’t watched Kid Cosmic yet, go fix that. It’s phenomenal. I really need a second season. I need more adventures with these characters and to watch their stories expand and unfold.
