Review: MA is a Fun Horror Thriller in Which Octavia Spencer Gives a Crazy Performance
Director Tate Taylor (The Help) was looking to make a movie for Octavia Spencer that would allow her to do something different than anything she’s ever done before. So, they teamed up to develop a new horror thriller called Ma.
The story centers on a lonely middle-aged woman who ends up befriending a group of teenage friends and letting them party in her basement. The relationship she starts to have with these kids becomes an obsession to her and it eventually turns into a terrifying ordeal for these teens as she starts to stalk them and as you’ve seen in the trailers… torture them.
Personally, I think they gave a little too much away in the trailers for the movie, but there are a few surprises and story twists that are revealed as the story unfolds. The movie is a fun horror-filled ride, though, and it’s one of those movies that will have audiences screaming, laughing, cheering with glee. At least that’s what it was like with the audience that I watched the film with.
Octavia Spencer delivers an awesome performance in the movie. She just lets loose in the role and brings her character to life to a level of unsettling yet humorous insanity. She is the best part of the movie and the only reason why it works so well. Without her and her performance, it probably wouldn’t be anything special. The movie is definitely worth watching for what Spencer brings to her character.
The psychological thriller also stars Missi Pyle, Luke Evans, Juliette Lewis, Allison Janney, McKaley Miller, Diana Silvers, Dominic Burgess, Victor Turpin, Corey Fogelmanis, Kyanna Simone Simpson, Dante Brown, and Gianni Paolo.
I had a great time watching the movie. It’s an entertaining movie going experience, especially if you see it with a big and lively audience. I think that audiences will get a kick out of the movie, it offers some weird and crazy entertainment!
Ma hits theaters this week on May 31st.
