Review: MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM EXTREME VS MAXIBOOST ON Is Fun On A Much Higher Level
Giant robots? Crazy light-show attacks? A wide variety of characters, abilities, and maps? This game honestly has just about everything that a fan of Mobile Suit Gundam could ever want. The fast-paced battles, various online and offline modes will give players a lot to do. However, there are definitely a few issues and it’s not the easiest thing to get into. But if players can put in the time, then this game is one of the better Gundam games to date.
This game started out as an arcade game and with its popularity, it’s finally coming to consoles! The move to console in a technical sense has gone over pretty smoothly. It plays great and moves very well. The only real gameplay issues are that the controls don’t feel intuitive on a controller and after looking up even some guides or other things it might take a minute to fully get a handle on the game or understand exactly what’s happening. Another issue is the camera. It can be quite jarring at times and cause some serious confusion, even for more experienced players. I understand that this game is meant to be extremely fast and have players be very aware of their surroundings, but it would’ve been nice if in the move to console they fixed some of these camera issues to be smoother and better handled.
One of the best parts of this game is the roster. It is impressive how many choices there are. Between various anime shows and the movies that they come from, it is staggering how many characters players can be. I’m a little disappointed that a handful of them are pretty similar to each other with only one or two moves or additional guns or other things attached. But the overall roster and variety are pretty good.
The biggest issue with this game is its lack of single-player modes and options. Players can choose through a few different fun modes, but for beginners, this game is extremely difficult and almost impossible to play. With there being such a wide variety of characters, various different attacks, and unique attacks for characters, it is a lot to deal with as a first-time player. The battles are almost always 2V2 which adds another massive layer of things to the jungle along with a very busy and flashy HUD while playing. There is no tutorial mode nor story mode at all that helps players understand controls or gameplay. Some fighting games don’t really need this and I get that, but for the complexity of this game and it’s intensity, a tutorial or basics mode is absolutely necessary. Yes, people can go online and find things and players can learn through trial and error but some basic tutorials explaining what the controls are, what is happening on the screen, and how to effectively use weapons is a must for this complex of a game.
Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS Maxiboost ON is as great and complex as its title is long. But with some camera issues and high difficulty with no tutorial, this game loses some of its greatness and asks too much of its players too early. If you enjoy the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, then this is a great and fun title, but be prepared to do a lot of learning outside of the game if you’re unfamiliar with this style of game.
